Until 2019 this species was included in the sugar glider umbrella, however genetic analysis revealed that 'sugar gliders' actually comprised three species: the sugar glider, found in the south-east, savannah gliders, found in the Top End and through swathes of inland Queensland, and Krefft's glider, found in the rainforests of Far North Queensland.
